Hello friends,
I’m standing in for Hannah today and I’m challenging myself not to mention the abnormally hot weather. (Did I just mention it? Let’s pretend I didn’t!).
Instead, let’s talk numbers. Did you know that spending just £5 with a local independent business keeps nearly £2 circulating right here in our community? Luckily for us, there are more than a few deliciously indulgent – and sometimes beautifully over-indulgent – ways we can do exactly that right here in Brighton and beyond. |
Slow down, stay cool, and find some Surplus Joy |
An important lesson to pick up from our Southern European brethren is the art of taking things a little slower when the mercury rises. Meander, don’t march. Enjoy the sunshine, but from the comfort of a shady canopy. Take your time over a meal, and don’t be shy about ordering another cool glass of something crisp, or a decadent ice cream dessert. Do less, enjoy it more.
To help you map out your month of slow indulgence, Hannah has put together a fantastic list of things to look out for in June. The one that caught my eye? The Surplus Joy feature, naturally! Because there is always room for more joy! |
Sorted for Father’s Day? (Hint: It’s Sunday 21 June) |
Speaking of supporting our incredible local indies, let's mention Father's Day nice and early. If you want to skip the standard socks and "World's Best Dad" mugs this year, we've got you covered.
Our Restaurants Brighton Gift Vouchers are the ultimate flexible foodie gift – accepted at over 30 of the city's finest independent restaurants, cosy pubs, and beachside spots. You get to champion local businesses, and Dad gets a legendary meal out on your tab. Win-win. |
There is still a bit of half-term left to enjoy, and there are heaps of mid-week and family-friendly offers worth investigating. We keep them all updated and listed for you in one handy place. |
Beyond the discounts, here are a few more lovely independent happenings you should absolutely know about:
- IL Bistro: Abe invites you to pop along and start your weekend right with their brilliant breakfast, served from 10:00am to 12:30pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
- The Roundhill: Adam wants to remind everyone that their award-winning, plant-based goodness is very much cooking up a storm.
- The Signalman: Romy can’t wait to welcome you into their gorgeous, sun-drenched beer garden.
- Bar 50ml: Stefano has laid on a rather special, must-try House of Negroni menu.
- Plateau: Ned and the team are on hand as always, ready to help you pair the perfect natural wine with your plates.

- Hop on a bus: Take a ride on the iconic Brighton Regency Routemaster for the ultimate vintage transport vibes and Afternoon Tea in style.
- Detroit-style deep pan in Sussex: We are obsessed with the newly launched Detroit menu at the award-winning Village Pizza Kitchen in Hurstpierpoint. Pillowy dough, caramelised cheese crust edges, and local Sussex toppings. Bliss.
- Burgess Hill Beer Trail: The Sportsman Pub is part of the trail with their brilliant new Koda Beer collaboration running until May 31st. Catch it before it's gone!
- Country Pub Vibes: Stop off for a pint and a bite at The New Inn in Hurstpierpoint.
- Greek charm in Hove: Pop along to Nostos for some Greek hospitality and that on-holiday-at-home feeling.

 | We are keeping incredibly busy behind the scenes! Next week, Team RB is co-hosting a sustainability roundtable with local hospitality leaders and policymakers. Plus, we’re hosting our next Women in Hospitality event – if you’re a woman in the local industry and want to connect, please do get in touch!
As for my own diary, I’ll be celebrating my sister’s birthday with a touch of riviera glamour at Cecconi’s, scouting out Sea Lanes ahead of a larger sustainability event at the end of June, and zipping between them all on an electric Beryl bike.
Elsewhere on the team, Emma fueled up at BAKED and Trading Post between meetings last week, before pulling off some remote work at Coppa Club. She rewarded herself with dinner at Mowgli (hitting their wings and cocktail giveaway), before heading out to Uckfield for a cidery tour and tasting at Bignose & Beardy, wrapping up the night with live music at their Pop-Up Cider Tap and excellent burgers at the Hare & Hounds Pub.
Meanwhile, Jude was on the move dropping shiny new BRAVO stickers to The Howard and Becky's Brownies, before popping into the Brighton Open Market to grab a few things and waving hello to Dom outside his new venture Lunch. She’ll also be learning the craft of croissants at the Open Bakery this weekend.
And Brittany was reminded of her abuelita (granny) at Meo's Mexican Night.
Did I say slow down? I meant you, not us!
Yours, with ice cream,
Ivanka and Team RB
