From Sussex Churdles to Worthing wins – here’s where to dig in.
Hello Friends!
The humble pie is in the news this week, as the campaign to get it onto UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage hots up. If it succeeds, British pie will join the likes of Neapolitan pizza, Belgian beer and French baguette. The campaign has a five-point manifesto, unites across the political divide, and celebrates regional delicacies from the Squab to the Fidget. |
Has anyone come across a Sussex Churdle? It’s a historic liver and bacon number, apparently. Or the citrusy Sussex Pond Pudding? You may know Banoffee Pie – created at The Hungry Monk in Jevington in 1971 – was the standout dessert of the 1980s. It’s enjoying a renaissance, back on menus at London’s most fashionable restaurants as well as legendary NYC establishments. |
Tasty Pies Under Sussex Skies |
- The Crazy Goose – showstopping savoury sharing pies with bone marrow mash
- The Regency – indulgent banoffee pie always on the menu
- CrabShack – the place to go for a fish pie on the Worthing seafront
- Open Bakery – pick from a selection of mouthwatering pies to take home
- The Better Half – go for pie of the week with a pint
Apparently, you can grab a seriously good pie on the terrace at Worthing FC. Best of luck to the team and supporters for their championship decider this weekend as they push for promotion to the National League. Worthing is having its moment in the sun – figuratively and literally – taking three of the top five spots in BRAVOS Best Sussex Restaurants. |

 | Last week, I was invited to Projects on Nile Street to hear about Just Life – a charity supporting people in temporary accommodation. This city has a significant homeless population, many of whom are children, and restaurants like Fourth and Church and Amari are adding £1 to your bill to support Just Life’s important campaign. This is community in action. And thanks for the pizza, Fatto a Mano!
Meanwhile, Brittany and friends headed down to Indian Summer to try some very popular menu updates and a new cocktail list with a twist. Sounds like they had an absolute blast – read all about it here.
Your weekend sorted: Roast upstairs, roasting downstairs at The Shot Show in the Cellar, comedy at Carne this Sunday. Plus, follow Bonsai Plant Kitchen to hear about their MASSIVE giveaway first - more on this next week.
Yours, with second helpings,
Hannah & Team RB
