Hello Friends!
One of the things I love most about living in Brighton & Hove is the surprise reveals it treats you to every day. Glance sideways while crossing a junction and – bam – there it is: glittering blue sea and rolling waves. Crest a hill and ta-da – the South Downs spread out before you. |

The best chefs take inspiration from what surrounds them, working with what's good right now. From Sussex producers like Billington mushrooms, Nutbourne tomatoes, The Mac's Farm eggs and Trenchmore beef to local catch – including monkfish, gurnard and lemon sole – fresh from the waters we live alongside. |
 | We also border award-winning Sussex vineyards, some – like Artelium and Albourne – within touching distance. Right now, preparations are underway for English Wine Week (20–28 June). Here are three events that are likely to sell out soon:
Stopham Wine x Lost in the Lanes – Friday 19 June. Seasonal seafood dishes with pairings, presented by Stopham’s Marie Davies.
Nyetimber x Steven Edwards – Wednesday 24 June. A four-course seasonal feast introduced by the chef himself, paired with Nyetimber wines.
Chapel Down x Furna – Thursday 25 June. Canapés on the terrace followed by four courses of seafood with Chapel Down pairings.
You won’t want to miss the first Brighton Oyster Festival happening that same week, with events and offers popping up across the city. One question, just how many oysters is too many?
|
 | As well as wine, we brew a fair bit too. There's The Urchin’s in-house microbrewery Larrikin (street party on 20 June), plus UnBarred, Brighton Bier and Harvey's, Gun Brewery and Abyss from neighbouring Lewes, heading to Brighton soon. |

Your response to last week's VATS THE PROBLEM campaign and support for the local hospitality industry has been immense. If you want to hear more about how things are for restaurants, chef Dave Mothersill spells it out here. There are just so many amazing people growing, making, cooking and crafting wonderful things. Let's take a beat to feel lucky. |

As a team, we really enjoyed brainstorming our favourite secret gardens earlier this week. If you missed the post, you'll find it here.
Rhys, our resident vegan, had a fine night out at Purezza, while I took the kids to try the new Sunday BBQ at STEM. Gosh, was I popular. More to come, but if I just say "sticky toffee pudding ice cream sandwich", you'll get the picture.
Next week I've got a great night planned: the Secrets Beneath The Sea exhibition at Brighton Seafront Gallery followed by dinner at The Vine House, which I'm guessing will be one of the openings of the summer. There's plenty of buzz around Burger & Beyond too...
Congratulations to Maré and Interlude on their places in the National Restaurant Awards Top 100, and the very best of luck to Carne's bar manager Nick, who's made it through to the UK finals of the prestigious Monin Cup 2026.
Yours, proud as punch,
Hannah & Team RB
