Quick real talk on hospitality, plus Editor’s Picks and January feel-good plans.
Hello Friends!
Quick real talk. I’m guessing most of you don’t spend quite as much time as I do trawling socials for restaurant news, or walking the streets of Brighton chatting to hospitality folks about how things are going – so I hope you don’t mind me sharing a hard truth. |
The landscape has rarely been this treacherous for the industry. January is always quiet, but the legacy of Brexit and Covid, taxes, fuel costs, food and wage inflation have knocked businesses and their bottom lines. Great restaurants and bars that should be thriving are struggling, and far too many have closed for good. Just this weekend, we’ll be saying farewell to the inimitable Shoreline Store and Kitchen at their closing down sale on 18 January. |

 | Here’s what you can do to help:
- Eat out at your favourite places – the simplest way to show love and make sure they stay open.
- Book ahead: it helps with staffing and reduces food waste.
- Got restaurant vouchers? Don’t leave them in a drawer – use them in January.
- Make no-shows a thing of the past. They cost restaurants dearly (and really sting).
- Try to understand price rises; they’re not personal – it’s inflation.
- If something’s not right, tell your server politely rather than venting online. It’s fairer, and you’re more likely to get what you want. (Here’s the Beeb on how to do it better.)
It’s not all doom and gloom. How could it be with the passion, innovation, hope and new openings in this city. And look – we know things may not be easy for you either. It’s January and, well, the world. So we’re sending a cosy winter hug to all our readers (if that’s not too weird).

What a week! Jude and I braved the storm for the Rockwater supper club – totally worth it. I took my first tour of The North Star (it’s stunning), and Jude filmed the menu updates and staff briefing at Cin Cin. Meanwhile, Amit’s been to Purezza for some vegan pizza magic. We’ve all been drenched to the skin, and everyone’s car seems to have broken down – but that New Year energy is everything. Let me at it!
Yours, in this together,
Hannah & Team RB
